Merchants of Cherry Creek North thrilled

The Profile, November 2010

With the holiday shopping season rapidly approaching, the merchants of Cherry Creek North are thrilled to see the construction crews gone and a new look in place.

As the finishing touches have been put on the $18.5-million streetscape renovation project which has transformed the popular shopping area into “The New North.”

Infrastructure improvements range from those invisible to the naked eye, including extensive water- and energy-saving systems, to equally extensive and attractive new signage, sidewalks, artwork, streetside furniture, recycling containers and garden spaces throughout the 16-block district.

To date, improvements have included the installation of 360,000 brick pavers on street corners and side streets; 315 parking meter poles to accommodate the first batch of new smart meters that will be installed throughout the district, replacing the dreaded green kiosks; 87 new benches; 21,700 plants; eight illuminated monuments serving as gateways to the district; 13 miles of irrigation pipe; and much, much more.

Still to come is the reconstruction of Fillmore Plaza, from 1st to 2nd avenues. After years of debate, the final design calls for reopening the block to limited traffic for the first time in a couple of decades, while preserving the ability to close it down for special events. Work on the plaza is expected to begin shortly after the first of the year, and is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2011 Cherry Creek Arts Festival, which takes place each year on 4th of July weekend.
