Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets has become a trusted name for custom shutters, shades, and blinds. From timeless designs to modern innovations, each project reflects an attention to detail and a deep understanding of how the right finishes can shape the feel of a home.

How did your journey with Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets begin, and what inspired you to start the business?

My dad started the business in 2003, and I began helping him right after college while I was looking for a “normal” job—I was actually a photography major. But I ended up staying, really enjoying sales, and continued growing within the company alongside my dad.

In 2020, my husband and I purchased the business from him. So honestly, it all happened a bit by accident, I just never left! Then in October 2024, we acquired a company called Colorado Space Solutions, which is when we expanded into closets. Now we offer both window treatments and custom storage solutions.

For someone visiting your showroom for the first time, what can they expect from the Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets experience?

We really aim to be experts in what we do, so when someone walks in, we guide them through selecting the perfect option—whether that’s window treatments or a custom storage solution. Our showroom is designed to supplement our in-home services. Our sales team goes into the home first, and then customers can come into the showroom to touch, feel, and operate the products, and finalize their selections.

It’s kind of the opposite of a typical retail model. You’ll notice the showroom is often quiet, but that’s because it supports our outside sales process. It’s really a place to experience the beauty of what we offer—seeing the colors, fabrics, and functionality in person. Opening drawers, adjusting shades—just getting a true feel for everything helps customers confidently make decisions for their home.

What advice would you give to homeowners who are beginning the process of upgrading their home or transforming their space; from windows, kitchens, bedrooms, etc?

Invest in what you really want. In your home, you truly get what you pay for, so identify what’s most important to you and prioritize those investments. Also, lean on experts. Most people don’t shop for their home very often, and it can feel overwhelming. Find businesses that will guide and educate you through the process. Take your time, learn, and invest in what matters most, it’s worth it in the end.

How can thoughtful window treatments or closet organization change the way someone experiences their home?

Window treatments can completely transform a home. They impact privacy, control light, and make spaces more comfortable. Especially here in Colorado, where they can help regulate heat and cold. They soften a space while also making it more livable.

Custom storage solutions can change your life in ways you don’t even expect. You really don’t know what’s possible until you see it. Even small updates can make a huge difference. For example, I recently had one of our closet specialists look at a small reach-in closet in my home. By adding shelves, baskets, and better hanging space, we basically tripled its functionality.

Our goal is to show people that we can make their lives easier and their homes more comfortable. Even with just these two product categories, we can truly transform how space feels and functions.

Which services or products tend to be the most popular right now?

Closets, especially primary closets, are very popular. There are so many ways to customize them, and while that’s a big part of what we do, we also love showing customers what’s possible with window treatments.

One of our most popular products right now is the Honeycomb Shade. It’s incredibly energy efficient, which is ideal for Colorado’s changing weather. It helps control both heat and cold, and it’s simple, functional, and effective.

We’re also seeing a rise in drapery and fabric elements. They really soften a space and act as the finishing touch. It's the “icing on the cake.”

How would you describe your design philosophy when working with clients?

When working with clients, we really focus on meeting them where they are. We’re not here to push our preferences, we want to learn what they like, educate them, and help them find the right product for their space. It’s important not to impose your own style. Even if something isn’t what I’d choose for my own home, it can still be perfect for the client and that’s what matters.

Personally, I lean toward a farmhouse, country style. I love warm tones, mixing whites and natural woods, and right now I’m really drawn to soft greens, especially calming sage tones. I also try not to overdo things, so I prefer a clean, uncluttered look.

What have been some of your favorite or most memorable projects?

We get to work in some amazing homes, so it’s hard to choose just a few. Honestly, every project is special because each one is completely unique. There’s something really rewarding about transforming someone’s space. Whether it’s just a few windows or an entire home, every project is custom and tailored to that person. That said, we especially love when we get to work on a full home and really help bring the entire space together.

What sets Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets apart from other window treatment or closet companies?

What really sets us apart is our focus on education. We’re not just here to sell. We want to teach our customers so they can make the best decision for their needs. We work within your budget and focus on creating something you’ll love. Everything we do is custom, so we always encourage people to share their budget and vision and let us show them what’s possible.

What does it mean to you to run a locally owned, women-led business in Cherry Creek North?

It means a lot. Right now, my focus is on supporting my employees and customers and continuing to build strong connections within the community. I also really value supporting other local businesses. Even though I’ve been doing this for a long time, and have owned the business since 2020, I still feel like I have so much to learn. I’m always trying to connect with other women business owners and grow. I’m constantly on that learning path.

If you could design your dream closet or window treatment setup with no limits, what would it look like?

I would have an incredible closet—fully lit, automated, and filled with luxurious fabrics. Everything would feel warm, cozy, and lived-in. I’m still very much drawn to that farmhouse aesthetic—natural woods, custom pieces, beautiful brick, and a big wood-burning fireplace. Think rich textures, warm tones, and a very “fall” feeling.

It’s funny—I’m redoing my kitchen right now, so I’m experiencing all of this as a client. And it’s hard! Even seeing these products every day, there are things I love that just aren’t always realistic.

But we live in a world with great alternatives. That’s something we really try to show customers—custom doesn’t have to mean out of reach. Give us a chance, share your budget, and often, we can find a solution that aligns with your vision and makes you happy.
